Wayne Riley backs Dustin Johnson for FedExCup glory after Indiana win

Wayne Riley praises Dustin Johnson after the world No 2 claimed a record-breaking win at the BMW Championship, assesses Davis Love III's potential Ryder Cup picks and predicts who will win the FedExCup.

Johnson is dynamic and so much fun to watch. He just obliterates golf courses and his wedge game has just improved so much after the last few months.

Johnson's three-shot win at Crooked Stick

It can't be long now before DJ makes the next step and takes the world No 1 spot. Jason Day hasn't been very good in this FedExCup series and Johnson is playing far better than both him and Jordan Spieth at the moment.

We said earlier in the week that the winner would be someone who can overpower a golf course and Dustin Johnson certainly fills that bracket. He is the number one player in the world right now, just not officially, and we're all blessed to be able to witness the game he delivers.

"You sense that it's going to be one of the big five who goes on to take FedExCup victory and I really think it's going to be DJ."

There are a couple of good reasons for Paul Casey to be smiling right now, too, after his back-to-back second-place finishes in his past two starts. He has been great, just been beaten by players who are playing better. It's unlucky for him, but his world ranking is heading in the right direction.

Decision time

It's a huge shock that we won't see Rickie Fowler at the Tour Championship, and it's a problem for Davis Love III ahead of his captain's picks.

Do you pick him for Hazeltine? I don't think you take a young man like Fowler in to a Ryder Cup and put him under the microscope to test his game, as he's only going to get beaten up.

JB Holmes would have liked to have shown Love a little more today, but it wasn't to be. Matt Kuchar summed the situation up nicely earlier on Sunday, though, that hopefully the USA captain won't judge players on their whole season and not just one championship.

He'll look at the last couple of months and pick the players who need to be on the team based on that period.

Looking ahead

The top five control their own destiny in the final event of the season, but the guys close behind like Rory McIlroy and Spieth will still feel like they can step up should those higher up not get a wriggle on.

Patrick Reed is another great player and will be interesting to watch there later this month. He's playing very well and won earlier in the play-offs at the Barclays, he has put together another decent finish here and will be very tough to beat in Atlanta.

You sense that it's going to be one of the big five who goes on to take FedExCup victory and I really think it's going to be DJ.  East Lake is a long, wide course and Johnson is just going to lick his lips over the empty week thinking about playing there.
