Thisara Perera took the fourth hat-trick in international Twenty20 cricket during Sri Lanka’s 69-run defeat to India in Ranchi.
Perera accounted for Hardik Pandya, Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh at the backend of India's innings to match the feats of Australia's Brett Lee and New Zealand duo Jacob Oram and Tim Southee.
However, Shikhar Dhawan (51) creamed a 22-ball fifty - his first in T20Is - as the hosts carded 196-6, before an attack inspired by Ravichandran Ashwin (3-14) restricted Sri Lanka to 127-9 to level the three-match series at 1-1 with one game to play, in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.
Dhawan ran riot after whipping the fifth ball he faced over midwicket for six, the 30-year-old dominating a stand of 75 from seven overs with opening partner Rohit Sharma (43).
Sri Lanka stemmed the run flow once Dhawan was caught behind, with Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane (25) dismissed in the 14th and 15th overs respectively.
Raina (30 from 19) and Pandya (27 from 12) then smeared 59 from 26 balls before Perera's three-wicket salvo in the 19th over concluded when he had Yuvraj caught for a first-ball duck.
Tillakaratne Dilshan, back in the Sri Lanka side having recovered from a hand injury, was stumped by MS Dhoni first ball, with the tourists subsequently slipping to 3-2 and 16-3.
Chamara Kapugedera (32) and Dinesh Chandimal (31) curbed the collapse with a stand of 52, while Dasun Shanaka (27 from 18) and Milinda Siriwardana (24 from 16) added an enterprising 48, but the away side fell way short.
