The Call Of Duty Championship will be held this week as teams from North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand battle it out in finals.

This is the first year of the World League, an expanded annual tournament that plays out through a two-stage league-style competition. Teams that reach the top of the table then go on to a play-off phase, where the winners win prize money, alongside an invite to the Championships.

With the competition taking place this week, you'll be able to tune into Sky channel 470 for Ginx eSports TV's coverage of the Call Of Duty Championships every day at 9pm from September 1, until the finals on September 4.

But while you might think Call Of Duty is little more than a game of guns, you will be quite surprised to learn just how similar to basketball or football the game is.

For one thing, there's a mode in the most recent version of the game that resembles a typical sport, where players of one team must take this ball - or 'drone', as it's called in-game - and throw it into what is essentially a basketball net in the opposition's side of the map.

Add into the fact that each player in the team plays a specific role, with certain abilities and weapons chosen to help them perform their duties, be it defend the goal, play as the striker or cover the midfield area of the map.

There are fewer players, of course, so roles do change at times depending on the flow of the game, but it's important to notice the similarities.

The skill comes from combining these traditional sports roles with pinpoint accuracy, fluid movement and even a mastery of the game's acrobatic movement system. It's a frantic game, and that only helps to build the excitement from moment to moment.

There are a few teams to watch out for during this week's Call Of Duty Championships such as Team EnVyUs, Splyce, Optic Gaming or Mindfreak, but there are plenty of underdogs, too. The competition this year is very tight indeed.

And remember that you can tune in to Ginx eSports TV from September 1 to watch the action unfold.
