Pele will not light the Olympic cauldron at Friday’s opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics due to poor health.

The Brazil football legend was due to undertake the honour at the Maracana Stadium but the 75-year-old confirmed in a statement that would not be possible.

"I'm not physically able to attend the opening of the Olympics," said Pele.

"Only God is more important than my health. In my life, I've had fractures, surgeries, pain, hospital stays, victories and defeats.

"As a Brazilian, I ask God to bless all who participate in this event."

Tournament organisers will now need to find a last-minute replacement for the three-time World Cup winner.
