Chestnut Ben was a surprise winner of the feature race at Musselburgh on Monday when supplying Yorkshire trainer Peter Winks and his amateur rider son Ryan with their first course success.

The 14/1 chance edged out front-running Aye Well by half a length in the Kilmany Cup Handicap Chase with Lightening Rod just a head back in third.

The successful rider said: "I've only been here once before and that was when this horse was only beaten a neck nearly two years ago. He loves going right-handed and most of his wins have been that way round.

"Although he is now eleven I still think he can win again and we came here today mainly for the better ground. The bulk of his wins have been at two miles but I'd say he stays two miles, three furlongs."

Conditional jockey Ryan Day lost his 7lb allowance after Iain Jardine-trained Shrewd stormed to victory in the Racing UK Profits Returned To Racing Handicap Hurdle.

Jardine said: "We haven't looked beyond today as that was the plan. He won pretty well so I suppose he'll go up a bit for that."

Michael Scudamore was on the mark with Benenden who trounced Eiri Na Casca by eleven lengths in the Alex Donaldson Handsome Handicap Chase.

The Herefordshire trainer said: "We always thought he would improve for the step up to three miles and he enjoyed the ground. My first winner actually came here on the Flat and it's a really well-run track with decent prize money."

Lucinda Russell, who saddled 10 runners on the card, and Peter Buchanan teamed up for a 164/1 double supplied by Simarthur and Sammy B.
