Further inspection at Yarmouth

Image: Yarmouth: Will inspect on Wednesday morning

An inspection will be held at 9am ahead of racing at Yarmouth on Wednesday.

Officials will check on a false patch of soft ground, which is believed to have been caused by leak in an underground irrigation pipe, between the five- and four-furlong markers down the home straight.

While it is expected that racing will go ahead as planned, a decision was taken by management at the course to abandon the five-furlong handicap which was scheduled to take place at 5.05pm due to concerns over the area of ground in question.

An inspection was carried out by officials ahead of racing today, together with jockeys and trainers including Ryan Moore, Jamie Spencer and David Simcock, as to whether the fixture should be staged.

The card was given the green light with the exception of the concluding Trafalgar Restaurant At Yarmouth Handicap over five furlongs.

Glenn Tubby, executive director at Great Yarmouth, said: "The area was not there yesterday and it hasn't been all summer.

"Immediately under that area, which is about 10 yards into the course, is an irrigation pipe. Our suspicions are that the pipe has leaked. We have turned it off at our end so it can't get any worse.

"We can't give an official reason though as the ground around it needs to be dug up, which we can't do until Friday.

"There has already been another inspection and the condition has improved. Things are not getting any worse, but the right thing to do was to abandon the five-furlong race tomorrow as well.

"Just to be sure there will be another inspection at 9am tomorrow."
