Roger Varian's Solomon's Bay impresses Andrea Atzeni at Great Yarmouth

News of the rest of the action from Great Yarmouth where winning newcomer Solomon's Bay impressed Andrea Atzeni.

Solomon's Bay floored some respected rivals when making his second start a winning one in the Greene King IPA/British Stallion Studs EBF Maiden Stakes.

Having finished a respectable sixth on his debut at Ascot, the son of Exceed And Excel built on that performance on his first start over seven furlongs.

The betting suggested it was a one-horse race with the Hugo Palmer-trained Via Serendipity, who finished third behind subsequent Group Two winner Rivet at York, sent off the 8-11 favourite.

Although the odds-on market leader came there with a strong challenge, he had no answer to the finishing kick of the Roger Varian-trained 8-1 shot who pulled away smartly to hold the rallying Calibration at bay by three-quarters of a length.

Will Johnson, assistant trainer to Varian, said: "He did well in what was a warm race and obviously the Ascot form has stood up. He had a lovely introduction there.

"We just thought coming here over seven furlongs on a nice, even galloping track would suit him. Andrea (Atzeni) was very impressed with the win. He travelled very professionally into the race.

"We will just have to take stock and assess his options now."

George Margarson struck with his one runner at the track after Shypen flashed home late on in the Danny And Peggy Wright Memorial Fillies' Handicap.

After setting a new course record over the six-furlong trip back in June, the three-year-old gained a first victory since that success having been out of luck in three previous runs.

Although hemmed in close to the rail, the gaps came in time for the 4-1 shot who reeled in Racing Angel close to the line before obliging by a neck.

Margarson said: "This filly broke the track record at the first meeting back in June. She has not had the best of draws and the last couple of times she has seen too much daylight.

"I told Jim (Crowley) to lock her away and wait for the gaps. They nearly didn't come, but after a while they became apparent.

"It is nothing detrimental to Jane (Elliott) that I took her off, but I told Jim a little while ago I would help him where I could."

Frankie Dettori was in fine form, scoring a treble on the day after securing two wins for William Haggas (as well as the feature on So Mi Dar).

Al Neksh (5-6) provided his second success in the Parklands Leisure Holiday Distributors Handicap, before Fastnet Tempest (3-1) showed his appreciation for a drop back down to a mile in the Sea-Deer Handicap, a race staged to honour the five-times course winner.

Of Al Neksh, Haggas said: "Last time at Goodwood he had to be pushed out the stalls and was a bit keen. Frankie gave him a beautiful ride and nursed him through the race

"Frankie is keen on keeping him next year so we won't over do it this year. He might have one more run."

He added: "He (Fastnet Tempest) didn't stay a mile and a quarter last time. I always thought he wanted a mile and a quarter but it shows you what I know.

"A mile suited him so we will stick at that. He is a baby so hopefully he will get a bit better.

"It's Disney stuff. We've had 23 winners in September now which is unbelievable. I am just hoping it keeps going."

Silvestre de Sousa made it 100 winners for the season to keep up the pressure on fellow title contender Crowley when booting home the Mark Johnston-trained Highly Sprung (3-1) to a five-length success in the concluding La Continental Cafe Handicap.

He said: "It's nice to get to 100 winners, especially on one for Mark Johnston who has been great through the years. He is a nice horse and has done it well."
