Sylvester Kirk expects Salouen to improve next year when stepped up to beyond a mile after the Upper Lambourn handler confirmed the colt has run his last race this season.

The son of Canford Cliffs backed up his second place in the Prix Jean Luc-Lagardere at Chantilly on Arc day when finishing third in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster on Saturday.

Kirk said: "He ran another good race Saturday on ground that he didn't like. He seems to be the solid marker for form.

"That's him done for the season now as he has had enough racing.

"We don't want to over do it with him, so we will give him a nice break and start him off in something like the Feilden (Newmarket).

"The feeling is he will get further than a mile as he is doing his best work at the end of his races.
