Connections of exciting novice chaser Kilcrea Vale are keen to adopt a patient approach and take things one step at a time.

The Nicky Henderson-trained gelding created a big impression on his debut over fences with a facile victory at Ludlow last week.

Although the six-year-old received a 16/1 quote for the JLT Novices' Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, there are no immediate plans for a dramatic rise in class.

Mike Spence, son of owner Alan Spence, said: "He is a proper horse and we always thought he would be that good over fences.

"He is a pretty smart horse but he just goes off the boil now and then.

"We will try and find a slightly better race for him but we will take it one race at a time.

"He got very tired coming down to the last at Ludlow but he had not had a run where the others all had.

"I think he is good enough for something like that (JLT) but we've not looked that far ahead yet.

"He has always looked a chaser and it should be the making of him."
