Our star columnist Richard Fahey takes us through his older horses in part one of his 2015 stable tour.
2014 was a huge year for Richard Fahey and the team at Musley Bank.
He trained more turf winners than any other handler and amassed more winners and prize money than ever before in his career. So what does the new campaign hold? Here's his guide to the older horses.
Arctic Feeling is rated 93 which is high enough but he’s such a reliable horse he’ll always win races and that will be the case again this year.
Alben Star is aptly named as he’s been an absolute star for us. He seems as good as ever and will go back to Lingfield to defend his title on Good Friday. After that he’ll be aimed at all the big sprint handicaps. I can’t imagine he’s going to get much better but you never know and he’s in good order.
Angel Gabrial is a lot higher than he was this time last year with a mark of 106 but will still be aimed at races like the Chester Cup. We feel he’s probably not a Group horse and the handicapper needs to give him a bit of a chance but he does love those big field handicaps.
Boy In The Bar has joined us from another yard over the winter. He has an official rating of 92 and is shaping quite well. We like him.
Duke Of Clarence is a horse we really like. He’s off 101 and is another Chester Cup horse for Marwan Koukash. He had a little setback last year but if we can keep him right he could make the step up to pattern company.
I’d love to get black type with Dusky Queen. She stays in training as a five-year-old to try and get some and she’s a tough genuine filly.
Eastern Impact had a great season last year and is now rated 100-plus so is another who is heading for races like the Wokingham.
We finally found out Gabrial didn’t stay middle distances last year – which took four runs – but he got himself well handicapped and duly won at Leicester. He’s in good form and will run in either the English or Irish Lincoln.
Gabrial’s Kaka is in great order. I felt he should have won the Balmoral at Ascot last October when he was drawn on the wrong side. He’s in both Lincolns and we’ll see what happens but I couldn’t be happier with him.
Gabrial The King is a new horse for us. Marwan would like him to get into the Chester Cup and we’re still learning about him but the early signs are encouraging.
Heaven’s Guest is five now but seems in great order this year. He’ll be in all the big handicaps again as well as some listed races and Group Threes. He’s a good, hardy horse.
Latenightrequest is another who we want black type for. She’s rated in the 90s and had a good 2014. Hopefully she’ll keep progressing.
Loving Spirit is a new horse to us and one we’ve been keen to buy for three years now. We’ve got him at last and have been pleased enough with him. He’ll be aimed at the good mile handicaps.
Manchestar could be interesting. He won two from two last year before a setback but could progress again. He’s a big horse who is going the right way at home.
A filly I do like is Miss Lucy Jane. She had a bit of a setback last season and finished early enough but she’s a big horse who could progress in the handicap ranks.
Rene Mathis had a good season last year and is another who will be aimed at all the big handicaps. Sometimes these older horses can get better and he’s in good order.
Spirit Of The Law has been a legend and wins his races every year. He’s rated 91 and I’ve put him in the Lincoln as he seems to get quicker the older he gets. Anything between a mile and ten furlongs is fine for him.
Supplicant is a horse we like. He was a good two-year-old and started to show a bit of form again later on last season. He ran well at Ripon one day and is the sort of horse who could easily pop up in a big handicap or end up back in pattern company. He’s done really well over the winter.
I’d like Tatlisu to step up again as I think he could be a Wokingham horse. I’d certainly hope he’d end up somewhere like that this summer.
