Leeds Rhinos second row Stevie Ward faces a long spell on the sidelines after being told he needs reconstructive knee surgery.
The 21-year-old was hurt in Leeds' final game of the regular season against Huddersfield last week.
Ward will miss their Grand Final date with Wigan at Old Trafford next Saturday and will also be unavailable for England's autumn internationals against France and New Zealand.
He had been a regular member of the Leeds squad this season, playing in 25 Super League games and scoring five tries.
Rhinos coach Brian McDermott said: "This is desperately sad news for Stevie as he has been in fantastic form for us this season.
"Our medical team will make sure he comes back even stronger next season. He is a key player in our group now and will have a bright future at the club."
