Wakefield captain Danny Kirmond signs a new two-year contract

Wakefield skipper Danny Kirmond has signed a new two-year contract to extend his stay at Belle Vue until the end of 2018.

The 30-year-old is the seventh player to sign a new deal with the Wildcats following Chris Chester's appointment as head coach in March.

Kirmond, who was out of contract this year, has been an integral part of the club since joining them from Huddersfield in 2012 and has led Wakefield to six wins from their last seven Super League matches.

"I'm delighted to have signed a contract extension for the next two years at the club," Kirmond said.

"Having been here for six years now, the club, the fans and the rest of the boys mean a lot to me and having seen some low times during my time here I genuinely feel the club is in the best position it's been in during my stay.

"It's been great since Chris came in and hopefully we can continue to work hard together to move forward. I look forward to the rest of this season and hopefully finishing my career off as a Wildcat."

Wakefield chairman Michael Carter, who has also tied up Matt Ashurst, Chris Annakin, Mickael Simon, Bill Tupou, Mike Sio and Tinirau Arona in recent weeks, is delighted the second rower has signed the deal.

"It is great news that Danny has signed for another two years," Carter said.  

"Danny loves this club and he was extremely loyal in 2013 when we went through all of our troubles.

"He could have moved elsewhere within the Super League and he didn't so I am really pleased for Danny and the club. It is another great step towards a stable squad for next year."
