Huddersfield Giants prop Nathan Mason has signed a contract extension until 2018.

Mason, 22, made his debut against Bradford in 2013 and spent time with lower league sides on dual registration before making his breakthrough at the John Smith's Stadium this year.

Oldham-born Mason has since made 15 appearances for the Giants and scored his first try against Catalans Dragons earlier this month.

The Giants youngster admitted coming to the end of his contract left some doubts on his future, and he was delighted to sign the new deal.

"I have always been at Huddersfield since signing professionally and as well as Paul [Anderson] as head coach, who played my position, I am lucky that the senior props such as Eorl [Crabtree], Sam [Rapira] and Craig [Huby] have helped and encouraged me - especially this year when I've played far more first grade than before," said Mason.

"I have some security now as it is worrying when you are out of contract at the end of the year and not knowing what the future is so I'm really glad this deal is done and announced now."

Giants coach Anderson had no doubts about the 6ft 4in forward's physical qualities and believes Mason will only improve with more time on the pitch.

"He is a naturally big man and will probably get bigger with age and the continued benefit of training alongside the proper nutrition programme," said Anderson.

"Game-wise he is like many aspiring players of his age in that he needs to play regularly against good opposition."
