Paul Sculthorpe has been appointed to England's backroom team, with the view of creating solid foundations for the 2017 World Cup.
The former double Man of Steel winner will work alongside assistant coach Paul Anderson, helping build the elite training programmes.
Sculthorpe, who captained Great Britain in 2006, expressed his delight on taking up the new role.
"It doesn't get much better than being part of your national side," he said. "Representing your country was always something I was very proud of and thoroughly enjoyed when I look back on my career."
With the addition of Sculthorpe, Wayne Bennett's new-look backroom staff include ex-England captains Jamie Peacock and Kevin Sinfield, along with Paul Wellens and Widnes coach Denis Betts.
Sculthorpe believes the future looks promising for England with the current crop of players in the national side.
"This is an exciting time to be associated with England Rugby League and I'd like to thank everyone involved for giving me this chance," he said.
