Wakefield chairman Michael Carter says the club will leave Belle Vue at the end of the year.

Writing in his programme notes ahead of the Super League game against Salford, Carter said the lack of progress on a planned redevelopment had left him with "no choice" but to serve notice of their departure.

Trinity have played at Belle Vue since 1895, and plans for a new stadium next to the M62 failed to get off the ground.

An agreement was reached with the stadium's owners in September for a revamped arena and retail park to be built at Belle Vue within two years, but work has not started.

"We gave a deadline of six months last September and literally nothing has happened since," Carter said.

"Super League have just introduced minimum ground standards again as part of an overall reward funding policy and, needless to say, we cannot meet this standard as the ground stands.

"This will have a significant effect on the club moving forward and, therefore, we have no choice but to look for pastures new.

"I am determined to ensure that this city gets what it was promised and those that promised much are held to account."

Initial talks have taken place with Dewsbury about the possibility of a ground share in 2018, while Super League clubs have been made aware of interest from outside the game's traditional heartland in taking an existing club's franchise and relocating it.
