Gareth Widdop leads team to victory after car accident

Gareth Widdop scores a try against Penrith

England international Gareth Widdop emerged unscathed from a car accident to lead his NRL side to victory.

St George Illawarra coach Paul McGregor watched his captain kick five goals from five attempts in a 26-12 win over New Zealand Warriors, and reported the car crash in the post-match media conference.

"He had a car accident on the way to the game, so he's done a really good job," said McGregor.

"The car is written off. To put that aside and perform like that is a credit to him."

Halifax-born Widdop said: "I'll be riding my push bike to training for the next few weeks. That's life."

And Widdop's 10 points enabled him to become only the third player in the history of the joint-venture club to reach 500, behind Jamie Soward (665) and Mark Riddell (517).
