Wakefield's Tyler Randell will miss the start of the Betfred Super League season after rupturing his medial knee ligament.
The 25-year-old, who joined Trinity from Newcastle Knights towards the end of last season, suffered the injury in the fifth minute of the Boxing Day defeat to Leeds Rhinos.
Wakefield expect Randell to be out of action for a minimum of 12 weeks and will visit a specialist in the New Year.
"It is a disappointing blow to lose Tyler, he has been training exceptionally well over pre-season," said Wakefield coach Chris Chester.
"We initially thought it could have been a season-ending injury but fortunately further tests have revealed that the injury is not as bad as first feared."
Wakefield begin their Super League campaign with a trip to promoted Hull KR on February 2.
