Salford have suffered a major blow to their top-eight hopes after revealing full-back Niall Evalds broke a leg in their 24-16 Betfred Super League home defeat by Huddersfield a week ago.

Evalds, who is in the England Knights elite training squad due to tour Papua New Guinea in October, is the Red Devils' joint leading try scorer this season, initially playing on the wing and then moving to full-back when Gareth O'Brien joined Toronto.

Salford coach Ian Watson said: "Obviously losing Niall is a blow for us, he's been terrific so far this season in attack and defensively with his backfield play.

"However, I'm confident with the players that I have at my disposal we can adjust and continue to perform while Niall is sidelined.

"This creates a chance for other players in the squad to now step in and grasp their opportunity with both hands."
