Hull hooker Danny Houghton has beaten his club captain Gareth Ellis to the prestigious 2016 Steve Prescott Super League Man of Steel award.

The 28-year-old Houghton, who provided the defining moment of Hull's historic Challenge Cup triumph at Wembley in August with a last-minute try-saving tackle, received almost twice as many votes as Ellis in a poll of Super League players.

Castleford's record-breaking winger Denny Solomona came third in the poll.

"I was taken aback when they announced my name. I couldn't stand up," Houghton said. "I was shocked to be short-listed.
"No words can describe how I feel at beating Gareth Ellis. It's scary what he does for this club. He's a freak, the best player I've ever played with. Every time he pulls on that shirt for Hull FC, he raises the dressing room tenfold. I
can't believe I've beaten him to it, to be fair. It's something I'll always cherish."
