Huddersfield: Super 8s preview

The Giants finished the season in fourth place

We take a look at the form of Huddersfield and what to expect from the Giants in the Super 8s.

Story so far:

Another solid showing from the Giants. They beat off some strong competition to edge into that fourth spot and guarantee themselves four home games in the Super 8s.

Any Paul Anderson side will also boast a rough, tough pack and his forward charges run in with plenty of the Baloo spirit in their sails. That gives skipper Danny Brough the platform to work his magic and release the set of talented British backs outside him. Very refreshing to see.

What’s gone right:

It’s so good to see the British players coming to the fore once more at the John Smith’s Stadium. The backline reads like a who’s who of talented home-grown players with Leroy Cudjoe, Joe Wardle, Jermaine McGillvary, Aaron Murphy and Jodie Broughton all chipping in.

Too many sides in Super League rely on Aussie imports, so the fact Paul Anderson puts his faith in those a little closer to home deserves some reward. Round of applause please.

Unusually Huddersfield have struggled against the big sides this season. In the past, they’ve often taken the scalps of Leeds, Wigan and St Helens, but not this season. They lost home and away to both Wigan and Saints, while drawing and losing against Leeds.

And that’s not to mention a crushing Challenge Cup defeat at Headingley, a ground where Huddersfield have a decent record. They’ve been consistent against those below them but if Huddersfield want to take steps towards a first Old Trafford appearance, they’ll need a giant improvement against the big boys.

Super 8 chances:

Pretty strong given their fourth-place finish. Those home games could prove crucial in the Giants’ bid to make the play-offs, hosting Catalans, Castleford, Warrington and Leeds. And even the away games won’t hold too much trepidation.

They lost by just a point to the Saints at Langtree Park, thrashed Hull FC 24-4 at the KC Stadium and beat the Warriors at the DW Stadium in Super League’s opening game of 2014. They know how to win away.

Full-back Jared Simpson has impressed since his inclusion in the side, but you need look no further than the inspirational man wearing number six. Time and time again, Danny Brough proves he’s one of the best halves in the competition and notched up his 100th Super League try this season to remind everyone of his longevity as well.

It comes as no surprise that he made the most attacking kicks in Super League with 160 - 29 more than anyone else - and kicked the most 40/20s. If you fail to shut down that trusty left boot in broken play, it’s an uphill battle to beat the Giants.
