Castleford Tigers have signed former England second-rower Danny Tickle on a short-term contract.

Tickle left Super League rivals Widnes by mutual consent last month prompting speculation the 33-year-old was about to announce his retirement.

However, Tickle, who missed the start of the season after being involved in an incident outside a nightclub in Wigan in November, has been snapped up by the injury-hit Tigers on a deal until the end of the season.

"I'm really grateful that Castleford have given me the opportunity to get back into the game," Tickle said on Castleford's website.

"I'm here till the end of the season and it's my opportunity to prove myself and my capabilities. I've played many a time down here at Castleford, it's a very tough place to come and they have got a great set of players here, with obviously really good coaching staff.

"The background, and everything about the club is really exciting. I'm looking forward to getting straight in to training this week."

Tickle, who began his Super League career with Halifax in 2000, scored 248 points from 45 appearances for Widnes after joining them from Hull in 2014.
