Castleford have expressed their disappointment after they were denied the opportunity to welcome an NRL side in a World Club Series fixture.

The series had been pencilled in for February and chief executive Steve Gill spoke of his desire to host one of the leading Australian clubs at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle after the Tigers secured the League Leaders' Shield in August.

But it was confirmed this week that Leeds will travel to Melbourne to take on the Storm in the World Club Challenge on February 16, with Hull and Wigan already scheduled to play St George Illawarra and South Sydney respectively in a double header at Sydney's ANZ Stadium a day later.

"It's disappointing and I understand all the frustrations from our fans and players alike," Gill said in a statement.

"You set targets at the start of the year only to find out late in the day that it won't be happening.

"We had heard that both the Melbourne Storm and Queensland Cowboys didn't wish to travel and compete, which is a shame, and hopefully not a reflection on how they view our game in the UK.
