Sydney Roosters captain Mitchell Pearce has left Australia to undergo treatment in an intensive rehabilitation facility after publicly admitting he has a problem with alcohol.

Pearce was put on gardening leave by his NRL club after a video showing him simulating a lewd act with a dog was aired on television in Australia.

The 26-year-old, who looks certain to miss the Roosters' World Club Challenge clash with St Helens at Langtree Park next month, faced the media on Friday for the first time since the incident.

An emotional Pearce said: "My behaviour was unacceptable. I'm embarrassed and take full responsibility for my actions.

"I acknowledge I have a problem with alcohol and it is something I have to address. It is not an excuse but a realisation that I finally need help.

"Together with the club I'm working on a solution for me to address these issues that will come out in the next couple of days."

"Pearce has tonight departed for the overseas facility with his mother, Terri. The club's concerns for Mitchell's welfare remain paramount as he seeks treatment."
