The annual State of Origin series will play a game in Perth for the first time in 2019 to grow its national appeal.

The NRL will break new ground by taking game two of the series away from the eastern states of Australia for the first time, with the exception of an exhibition match that was held in Los Angeles in 1987.

The series between New South Wales and Queensland usually takes place in Sydney and Brisbane.

It was last played outside of those two cities in 2015, when the series ventured to the 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Perth was chosen ahead of Auckland as the NRL take their showpiece event to new markets, with the game set to be held at the new Perth Stadium.

"We saw Melbourne embrace State of Origin in 2015 and we expect Perth to do the same in 2019," said NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg.

"Taking Origin to new venues has huge benefits for the game. It grows the game in other markets and showcases our premium product to a new audience."

Queensland have been dominant in recent times, winning the title 10 times in the last 11 years.

That includes winning this year's series 2-1 despite losing 18-14 on Wednesday in Sydney following earlier victories in Brisbane and Sydney.
