Swinton Lions produced a stunning upset by knocking Super League side Huddersfield Giants out in the fifth round of the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup.

The Lions, who have won only two of their 11 games this season in the Kingstone Press Championship, progressed thanks to a late Luke Waterworth try which proved to be the final score of their 28-24 triumph.

Rick Stone's Giants have been in similarly poor league form, with six points from 11 games, but they claimed an early lead when Aaron Murphy crossed for a try.

Swinton levelled through Shaun Robinson in the 13th minute and the rest of the first-half continued in similar fashion with Sam Wood and Darnell McIntosh scoring for the home side and Rhodri Lloyd and Mike Butt responding.

The Giants led by two points at half-time, having hit an extra conversion, but Connor Dwyer put Swinton in front until 14 minutes from time, when Oliver Roberts' try, converted by Izaac Farrell, restored their narrow lead.

But Huddersfield would come unstuck four minutes from time when Waterworth scored from dummy half, with Chris Hankinson's conversion proving to be the final score of a famous Lions win.

There was almost a second early exit for a Super League team, the Salford Red Devils were able to overcome the sending-off of Justin Carney to beat League 1 newcomers Toronto Wolfpack 29-22.

Toronto's latest signing Ryan Brierley scored on his debut to put his new side up 16-12 after 26 minutes as they looked to continue an unbeaten start to their debut campaign.

They had rallied from conceding an early try to Kris Welham with successive scores by the impressive Liam Kay and Quentin Laulu Togagae.

Salford were still trailing when Carney was dismissed by referee Jack Smith for apparently using foul and abusive language but they were able to grab a half-time lead thanks to a second try from Greg Johnson.

Michael Dobson, whose high kick had set up Welham's opener, extended Salford's lead with a try just after the break and Gareth O'Brien added their fifth try with 14 minutes remaining.

Fuifui Moimoi did get Toronto on the board again but his score came in the final minute, too late for the Wolfpack to mount an unlikely comeback.

Luke Cresswell scored four tries as Barrow secured their place in the sixth round with nine tries in a 50-28 win over the York City Knights.

Halifax ran in six tries, the last two going to Ben Kaye, in a 36-12 win at Whitehaven, while Josh Hardcastle crossed twice for Featherstone as they eased past Oldham 30-4.

The closest of Sunday's games came at the Tetley's Stadium where an 84th-minute drop goal from Lewis Fairhurst earned Dewsbury a 23-22 extra-time win over Batley.
