Andy Murray breezed into the third round of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday with a straightforward 6-2 6-4 win over American Steve Johnson.

Murray, who was playing his first match since helping Great Britain qualify for the Davis Cup last month, dropped his opening service game the world ranked 47th Johnson.

But the sluggish start was only a minor blip on an overall excellent performance by the British No 1. He immediately got the break-back in the first set and followed that up by winning four games on the bounce, eventually taking the first set against serve 6-2 in 34 minutes.

Johnson was able to keep up with Murray in the second, with the set going on serve until 5-4. Once more Murray broke Johnson at the crucial time, taking the match in 1 hour and 16 minutes.

Andy Murray reflects on beating Steve Johnson in Shanghai, then Mark Petchey & Miles Maclagan analyse his win.

After the match Murray told Sky Sports Tennis: "I thought I played well. I struck the ball very clean off both sides, returned well and the serve was good.

"I got a lot of free points on the first serve and I was hitting my spots there when it landed.

"I could have made things a bit easier in the second set but I played well, I moved well, it was a good start for me."
