Second seed Marin Cilic suffered a surprise defeat to Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarter-finals of the Rotterdam Open.

World No 13 Cilic, the highest remaining seed left in the tournament following the withdrawal of Richard Gasquet, slumped to a 3-6 6-3 6-4 defeat against the German.

After taking the opener, Cilic became increasingly erratic and 30 unforced errors allowed Kohlschreiber to gain a foothold.

He needed just two breaks to forge ahead in the match and the world No 32 sealed his place in the semi-finals with an ace.

Kohlschreiber said: "I gained a lot of confidence after my break in the second set and it gave me belief that I could win the match.

"It feels great to stun a great player like Marin in such a big tournament.

"Sometimes everything falls into place. Looking back, I made the right decisions on the decisive moments."

Kohlschreiber will next take on fifth-seeded Frenchman Gael Monfils in what should be an entertaining semi-final on Saturday.

Monfils advanced after beating promising German Alexander Zverev 7-6 6-3 in Friday's final match.

Monfils eventually clinched a tight first set after winning a tie-break 7-4, having been broken when he served for the set.

And Monfils then managed to save all seven of the break points he faced in set two, meaning the one break he secured was enough to put him through after just over an hour and a half.

He boasts an 11-2 career head-to-head lead over Kohlschreiber ahead of Saturday's match-up.

In an earlier quarter-final, Martin Klizan fended off five match points in his dramatic comeback win over Roberto Bautista Agut.

The Slovakian world no 43 saved two match points at 4-5 in the second set and three more in the next game as he fought back to complete a  6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (8-6) 6-0 victory.

Sixth seed Bautista Agut had won 13 of his last 14 matches, but could not serve out for another victory in the tense second set.

Seizing his reprieve, Klizan edged out the Spaniard in the resulting tie-break and then raced through the third set to secure a semi-final against qualifier Nicolas Mahut, who  upset eighth seed Viktor Troicki.

The Frenchman sealed a 6-2 6-1 win over his Serbian opponent in 71 minutes.
