Roger Federer has announced that he will return to action at the Monte Carlo Masters in April.

The 34-year-old former World No 1 is recovering from a knee operation, having suffered a torn meniscus the day after his Australian Open semi-final defeat to Novak Djokovic.

He had originally planned to be back on tour after a month but has now decided he will have to miss the Indian Wells Masters in March, before returning for the start of the clay-court stretch.

Federer, a 17-time Grand Slam winner, posted a slow-motion video of himself hitting a serve on Facebook.

And the Swiss great wrote: "The rehab for my knee is going really well.

"I have now had a lot of great practices on the court and in the gym. As it is a long year, I don't want to push it too hard and come back too soon.
