Sam Querrey was given a point penalty while defending match point against Adrian Mannarino

Sam Querrey exited the Miami Open in bizarre circumstances as he was penalised for a code violation when facing match point against Adrian Mannarino.

The world No 34 was serving to stay in the match at 4-5 in the decisive set when he fell 0-40 down after a series of listless serves and wild backhands.

That prompted the umpire to issue a point penalty to hand his French opponent a 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-4 win, much to his and the crowd's bemusement.

"It's true that it was a bit bizarre to finish like that," Mannarino told L'Equipe. "But in any case, he was not moving well any more so the outcome would have been the same.

"From 2-2 in the third set, I could see that he was not moving as well, not adjusting on his shots, and that it was becoming difficult for him.

"On the other hand, he was more relaxed and was serving a bit better. But I knew once I could return [serve] well enough, once I got the upper hand in a rally, it was practically over."
