Novak Djokovic to face Andy Murray in Madrid Open final
Sunday 8 May 2016 15:59, UK
Novak Djokovic will face defending champion Andy Murray in the Madrid Open final after overcoming Kei Nishikori in straight sets on Saturday.
The world No 1 needed just two hours to battle past Nishikori, but had to navigate a tricky second set to claim a 6-3 7-6 (7-4) victory.
Djokovic spurned four match points to be broken for the first time in the match at 5-4 in the second set, but came through a tie-break to seal his seventh successive win over Nishikori.
The Serbian has won 11 of his last 12 matches against Murray, most recently at the Australian Open final in January. The showdown on Sunday will be shown live on Sky Sports 3.
"It wasn't easy to play in these very windy conditions, but overall I'm very pleased," Djokovic said.
"Andy has tremendously improved in the last couple of years on the clay courts, he has already proved that he's definitely one of the best players in the world on this surface as well.
"The rivalry continues. We have so many great finals, great matches, and I look forward to another one."
Earlier on Saturday, Murray claimed his place in the final by defeating home favourite Rafa Nadal for the second successive year.
The British world No 2 ended Nadal's 13-match unbeaten run on clay with a devastating 7-5 6-4 success.
