World No 8 Belinda Bencic and former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki will miss the French Open, which starts in Paris next week, because of injury.
Swiss teenager Bencic, who climbed up the rankings last year and won WTA Tour events in Eastbourne and Toronto, has been struggling with the problem since March.
Bencic has not played since the tournament in Charleston last month, where she lost 6-1 6-1 to Elena Vesnina in the second round.
Her place in the draw for the season's second Grand Slam will go to America's Lauren Davis, who is ranked 115 in the world.
Wozniacki was forced out of recent tournaments in Madrid and Rome with a right ankle injury and she has now confirmed Paris will come too soon for her return to action.
The 25-year-old has tumbled down the rankings in recent months and is currently 34th after having been as high as fourth last August.
She has not featured on the tour since losing to Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in the last-32 of the Miami Open in March.
