Andy Murray has withdrawn from next week's Rogers Cup in Toronto.

The world No 2 has decided to miss the Canadian event for the first time since making his debut in it in 2006 as he says his body needs additional rest following his Wimbledon success.

Murray, who also opted out of Great Britain's Davis Cup victory over Serbia at the weekend, said: "I always look forward to coming to Canada and it's the first time I've missed the tournament, the guys there do a great job and always look after the players.

"My body needs some recovery time after reaching the latter stages of tournaments over the past few months.

"I'm sorry to my fans in Toronto but I look forward to being back in Canada next year."

Murray has won the Masters 1000 title in Toronto three times and defeated Novak Djokovic in last year's final.

"Andy has been very loyal to our event over the years, but certainly we are disappointed he has chosen not to be in Toronto this year," said tournament director Karl Hale.
