Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares fell short in their bid to lift the Rogers Cup doubles title in Toronto as they lost to Ivan Dodig and Marcelo Melo 6-4 6-4 in a rain-interrupted final.
Second seeds Murray and Soares, in their second ATP Masters final of 2016 after finishing runners-up in Monte Carlo, were broken once in each set to go down in an hour and 10 minutes.
Scot Murray and his Brazilian partner, the reigning Australian Open champions, were a break and 4-3 down in the opening set when rain forced a lengthy delay, prompting tournament organisers to move the final to the Grandstand court.
Dodig and Melo, the 2015 French Open champions, moved into a 5-4 lead after the match had resumed and served out to take the first set 6-4 before adding the second by the same score.
Murray and Soares overcame Canadian home favourites Daniel Nestor and Vasek Pospisil 6-4 6-7 10-7 in their semi-final but could find no way past the third seeds on Sunday.
Croatian Dodig and Brazilian Melo, runners-up in Toronto two years ago, made the decisive break in the sixth game of the second set before clinching a straight sets victory.
