Andy Murray overcame a back injury to beat Bernard Tomic 6-4 6-4 and seal a place in the Cincinnati Open semi-finals.

The British No 1, who won his 600th ATP Tour match on Thursday, secured a straight sets win over the Australian, although it was not as easy as the scoreline might suggest.

Murray needed treatment early in the first set for a lower back issue but claimed a vital break in the fifth game and, despite looking a little heavy-legged at times, safely served out the set.

Tomic held serve in his first four games of the second but had a meltdown in the ninth game as Murray sent down some huge returns to break the Australian to love.

Murray then made the most of his first match point to secure victory, his 21st on the bounce, and set up a tough semi-final clash with Canada's Milos Raonic.

"I knew that coming straight from the Olympics I was going to be tired. But I've still managed to win," Murray said. "Conditions help a bit. There are not a lot of long rallies. I have a few days off when this week is done and then I'll prepare for the US Open."

The fourth seed was one of Murray's victims as he claimed a second Wimbledon title, the victory that preceded his gold medal success at the Olympic Games in Rio.
