Judy Murray believes 20 players are in with a chance of winning the women's Wimbledon title this year

Judy Murray believes this year's Wimbledon crown is up for grabs with up to 20 women in with a chance of landing the title, including Britain's Johanna Konta.

Seven-time singles champion Serena Williams is not playing this year as she prepares to give birth to her first child later this summer.

That leaves the women's tournament wide open, according to Murray, who believes Konta is among this year's contenders at the All England Championships.

"I think it is wide open," Murray told Tuesday's Sportswomen show on Sky Sports News HQ.

"Serena has been a standout for so many years now but I think we've seen with the French Open with Jelena Ostapenko coming through against the odds and taking the tile as a young 20-year-old that the women's game is very open.

"There are probably about 20 or so players that could actually come through and win this title which is very exciting for someone like Johanna Konta. She is in the mix as the number six seed."

Murray also believes two-time champion Petra Kvitova could emerge as a front runner for the tournament following her impressive return to action after suffering serious injuries to her playing hand when she confronted an intruder, who broke into her home last December.

"The speed of her [Kvitova's] comeback has been exceptional," she said.

"I think it was just her second tournament back, at Edgbaston, where she came through and won the title. It was tremendous and she plays very well on grass.

"She has such a flat hit and it really shoots through on the grass. She's a lefty as well which makes it even more tricky, especially with her swinging serve.

"She likes to come forward. She's very comfortable on grass and she has a good record here. I think when something like that happens to you, you appreciate every moment and she is coming into this more relaxed like she has got a second chance.

"She has got to be one of the favourites here which is uncanny given what has happened to her and how much time she has had away from the game."
