Jan-Lennard Struff was edged out by fellow countryman Alexander Zverev in a dramatic three-set clash in Monte Carlo, but he did produce some moments of magic, which included a stunning drop volley midway through the second set.
Third seed Zverev won the opening set but both players struggled to hold serve in the second as Struff levelled.
Zverev cut a frustrated figure throughout the match, lashing out at an advertising cushion at one stage, yet he rallied to win the final set 6-4, to set up a potential quarter-final tie against his brother Mischa.
However, although Struff was sent packing, he provided a couple of moments of brilliance, including a beautiful drop volley in the second set which left his opponent shell-shocked.

Roberto Bautista Agut also hit the headlines in Monte Carlo, accidentally hitting a ball-boy with the ball during his straight-sets defeat to David Goffin.
The Belgian fended off a valiant fightback from Bautista Agut to prevail 6-4 7-5 in a gruelling tussle, and Goffin admitted: "I just saw the ball going straight to the ball boy.
"I was surprised he only had a warning. For me, if you send a ball at the head of a ball boy, you're out.
"I don't know what the rules are exactly and how he could only get a warning. He was saying the ball bounced, and the ball boy just happened to be there. Unlucky for him."
