Kyle Edmund maintained his impressive charge at the Madrid Open draw with an emphatic dismissal of David Goffin to reach the quarter-finals.

The 23-year-old secured one of the biggest victories of his career on Wednesday when he defeated 12-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in three sets, and backed up the victory with a 6-3 6-3 success against world No 10, Goffin.

Edmund, who will break into the world's top 20 next week, continued to demonstrate his growing maturity and used his aggressive style and powerful serve to good effect during the one hour and 12 minute encounter.

Belief growing for Edmund

Edmund secured his second win over a top-10 opponent with victory over Goffin, after breaking the duck against Grigor Dimitrov at the Australian Open.

"My game is one where the better I manage it, pick my moments to be aggressive and not pull the trigger too often then I play well," Edmund told Sky Sports.

"I feel like I did that really well. I served really well which got me through easy games and got me out of some tricky situations."

The British No 1 broke his Belgian opponent's serve in the opening game of the contest and remained assured behind serve, before securing the first set with a second break - just like in his victory against Djokovic.

Goffin, who had beaten his younger opponent in their only previous meeting in the 2015 Davis Cup final, brought up two break points in the opening game of the second set - his first of the encounter - but Edmund showed great steel to repel the danger and hold serve.

Edmund asserted his control on proceedings with a third break of the match in the sixth game and, despite failing to convert a match point opportunity on Goffin's serve, made no mistake behind his own delivery.

Denis Shapovalov, world No 43, will be Edmund's next opponent after the talented Canadian defeated fellow countryman Milos Raonic 6-4 6-4 in the first meeting between the pair.

Edmund v Shapovalov Head 2 Head

The four meetings between Edmund and Shapovalov have been shared with the Brit winning their most previous encounter in Brisbane earlier this season.

The 19-year-old is featuring for the first time in the Madrid Open and extended his stay in the Spanish capital with a confident performance against world No 24 Raonic, who is still working his way back to full fitness this season.

Dusan Lajovic caused a big shock with a comeback three-set victory against world No 6 Juan Martin del Potro as the Serbian qualifier won a final set tiebreak to progress 3-6 6-4 7-6(8-6) and book a quarter-final encounter with big-serving Kevin Anderson, who beat unseeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 7-6(9-7).
