Sabine Lisicki needed just 67 minutes to overcome Venus Williams in the opening round of the Rogers Cup in Toronto on Monday.

The 25-year-old German won 6-0 6-3 against the No 14 seed, who struggled with her serve and sent down seven double faults after heavy rain forced a delay to the start of proceedings.

Williams, 35, a seven-time Grand Slam singles winner and now ranked 22 in the world, managed to win just five of 24 points on her second serve.

Lisicki’s victory never looked in doubt after taking nine of the opening 10 games, with the world No 24 securing victory on her third match point.

"It's always tough after a long rain delay, you don't know if you are ever going to get onto the court and with a tough match against Venus," said Lisicki.

"It's always a pleasure to play her because you know you have to play well to beat her, so I'm really happy with my performance today."

The only other match to be completed was Flavia Pennetta's 6-4 6-1 victory over Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada.

Pennetta's reward for her victory is a second round clash with top-seed Serena Williams on Tuesday.
