US Open 2015: Grigor Dimitrov and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga win

There were opening day wins at the US Open for seeds Grigor Dimitrov and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga but an early exit for Kei Nishikori, who suffered a shock defeat in New York.

Nishikori was beaten 6-4 3-6 4-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 by Frenchman Benoit Paire but there was no such trouble for Dimitrov.

The Bulgarian, who split from his coach Roger Rasheed after a third-round loss at Wimbledon earlier this year, cruised past Australian Matthew Ebden in straight sets 6-4 6-2 6-4.

Tsonga, seeded 19th at Flushing Meadows this year, reached the quarter-finals of the tournament in 2011 and he got his campaign off to a quick start this time around, beating Jarkko Nieminen of Finland 6-3 6-1 6-1.

There were also wins for 10th seed Milos Raonic, who beat Tim Smyczek 6-4 7-6 6-1, and Jeremy Chardy who won 6-2 6-1 6-7 6-2 against American Ryan Shane.

Belgium's David Goffin, seeded 14th, also made light work of Simone Bolelli in straight sets, winning 6-4 6-1 6-2.

American Mardy Fish, competing in his last tournament, ensured he delayed his retirement by at least a couple of days, beating Marco Cecchinato of Italy in four sets 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-1 6-3.

Fish, whose has struggled with anxiety disorder, decided to wrap up his career at the US Open to try to make some new memories at his home Grand Slam tournament.

In 2012, Fish had to withdraw before his fourth-round match against Roger Federer because of a panic attack. He hadn't played at Flushing Meadows since.

"I'm glad I got to come back here one more time," the 33-year-old said after his win.

Fernando Verdasco beat German Tommy Haas in a five set thriller, eventually winning 3-6 6-1 6-7 (3-7) 6-3 6-1.

Benoit Paire knocked out last season's finalist Kei Nishikori after being two sets to one down in the first round of the US Open

Elsewhere, 18th seed Feliciano Lopez overcame Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets, winning 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 6-3, while 25th seed Andreas Seppi beat American Tommy Paul 6-4 6-0 7-5.  

Radek Stepanek was forced to retire in the fourth set of his match with Marsel Ilhan, who was leading 6-0 2-6 6-4 3-2, while Lu Yen-Hsun was also forced off court against Mikhail Kukushkin, who was ahead 6-3 6-3 3-0.
