Victoria Azarenka claimed a hard-fought victory over Angelique Kerber to reach the fourth round at the US Open.

The two-time runner-up is rediscovering her best form after overcoming a persistent foot injury and she came through her toughest test at the New York tournament, sealing a 7-5 2-6 6-4 win over 11th seed Kerber.

Azarenka battled back from 5-2 down to take the opening set, but Kerber seized command of the second set and quickly levelled the contest.

In the final set the more aggressive approach of Azarenka eventually ground down Kerber's defences and the 20th seed clinched victory after two hours and 52 minutes.
