Serena Williams says pressure is off ahead of Wimbledon defence

Serena Williams is feeling no added pressure this week ahead of her bid for a 22nd Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon.

Williams will defend her title over the next fortnight, looking for a first major title in 12 months after disappointments in the US, Australian and French Opens.

But the world No 1 says there is no extra desperation to succeed in the tournament, despite the knowledge she would be left without a Grand Slam in her possession if she fails again.

Victory at Wimbledon would be Williams' seventh and take her level with German great Steffi Graf on 22 in the Grand Slam career list - Margaret Court leads that list with 24.

Williams said: "It was a great accomplishment to win four Grand Slams in a row twice in my career. It's pretty cool.

"This year I don't feel as much tension as I usually do. I'm feeling pretty good. Honestly, I don't feel any pressure or stress. I feel good and confident."

Williams beat Spain's Garbine Muguruza in last year's Wimbledon final, and she is likely to be one of the American's biggest rivals this season after beating her in the French Open final to win a first Grand Slam.

And Williams says looking back at that Paris defeat, as well as the Australian Open final reverse against Angelique Kerber, is enabling her to continue improving her game, even at the age of 34.

"It's important to learn from every loss. I think I usually do that," she added. "Throughout my whole career I have been able to learn a lot and come back a much better player."

Williams opens her tournament against qualifier Amra Sadikovic on Tuesday and she is looking forward to the return to a grass court surface that suits her powerful game, and at a venue that she clearly loves visiting each year.

"I enjoy it just being on grass. It's usually the only tournament I play on grass," Williams said.

"It's a unique experience. It's just that one time a year you just get to get on this amazing, beautiful surface. It feels really good.

"When I'm walking down those corridors or hallways, you think of different moments that you've had, different moments that you've won, or didn't win.

"I try not to focus on those moments because I try to create a new moment every time I walk out there."
