Juan Martin del Potro recorded his biggest win in three years as he beat fourth-seed Stan Wawrinka in the second round of Wimbledon on Friday.

The 2009 US Open champion upset Wawrinka, a two-time major champion, 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7-2) 6-3 under the roof on Centre Court.

Del Potro, who could be a potential opponent for Andy Murray in the semi-finals, is playing in his first major since the Australian Open in 2014 after undergoing three wrist surgeries.

"It feels amazing, it's a great sensation," said the 27-year-old. "I enjoyed the crowd. It's an incredible feeling, that's why my hands are still shaking.

"I feel alive again. After sitting at home for two years, this feels like a second or third career."

Del Potro has seen several comeback attempts cut short in recent years but showed flashes of his old self in an impressive win over Wawrinka, who hit 48 unforced errors in a below-par display.

The Argentine reached the semi-finals in his last appearance at Wimbledon in 2013, but looked to be up against it as he dropped the opening set to Wawrinka.

However, a double fault handed Del Potro a break early in the second set and he took advantage as Wawrinka's level dropped.

Neither player was able to seize control in the third set, with four successive breaks followed by eight holds in a row.

However, it was Del Potro who dominated the tie-break, reeling off seven consecutive points to take a two-sets-to-one lead.

Wawrinka hit a backhand beyond the baseline to give Del Potro a break in the fourth set and he served it out to progress to the third round.

Later, Nick Kyrgios also sealed a third-round spot after a five-set win against Dustin Brown.

The Australian was typically fiery during his 6-7  6-1 2-6 6-4 6-4 win, and his temper threatened to boil over in the fourth set until he sealed a break point that eventually forced a decider. Kyrgios remains on a potential last-16 collision course with Andy Murray.
