Kyle Edmund became Britain's first player to reach the third round at the US Open after a straight sets win over Ernesto Escobedo.
The British No 3 is enjoying his best ever performance at a Grand Slam tournament after defeating Escobedo 7-5 6-4 6-4 to set up a match with John Isner in the next stage at Flushing Meadows.
Edmund had produced a career-best win over 13th seed Richard Gasquet in the first round and followed up with a composed performance against his American wild card opponent.
Finishing with 54 winners, Edmund also displayed gritty defence on his own serve, and calmly completed the victory in sweltering conditions in New York.
"I'm very pleased, a lot of good things today," Edmund told Eurosport. "I thought I played a much cleaner match. I think a lot of things went better for me against Gasquet, so this match was more about toughing out a lot of longer rallies.
"You've got to take the good with the bad. He's the type of player that can hit good form at any point. In some games, he just hits winners against you, and sometimes he gives you some errors. It's about finding that balance."
American 20th seed Isner improved to 9-0 in US Open second-round matches. He struck 38 aces, but received treatment on his right knee and for blisters on his foot before beating Steve Darcis 6-3 6-4 6-7 (10-12) 6-3.
