British No 1 Johanna Konta suffered an early exit to French sixth seed Caroline Garcia at the US Open on Tuesday.

Konta, who has not beaten a top-10 player all season, went down 6-2 6-2 to Garcia on the Grandstand Court.

"I don't think there's too much to really beat myself up about," Konta said. "I mean, that's just the way it is sometimes."

Konta did not progress further than the second round at a Grand Slam tournament this year.

The 27-year-old went into the US Open ranked 46, but she has shown glimpses of the form in 2016 reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon and climbing to fourth in the world.

But Garcia, who has been heading in the other direction and denied Konta a place at the WTA Finals last year, proved far too strong.

The Frenchwoman's serve in particular was very impressive, sending down seven aces and denying Konta a break point opportunity throughout the match.

Two early double faults did not help Konta and, although her serve and game improved, the damage had already been done as Garcia clinched victory after an hour and 15 minutes.
