Djokovic, the top seed, takes on Brazil's Joao Souza, the world No 89, while defending champion Williams is challenged by Russia's Vitalia Diatchenko, the world No 86.

Djokovic is looking for his second US Open title while Williams, constantly in pursuit of the record books, wants to wrap up a calendar Grand Slam having already won in Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon.

Great Britain's women's No 1 Heather Watson also gets her campaign underway with a match against American Lauren Davis on court 17 at 4pm. Watson has never progressed beyond the first round at the US Open so her match will be a must-watch for British fans.

The jam-packed Flushing Meadows bill continues with one of the best first-round encounters as two-time US Open winner Rafael Nadal meets the highly promising Borna Coric. Nadal's form has been less than stellar this year so the challenge from the Croatian youngster will be an interesting one.
