Goldberg will be the first inductee to the WWE Hall of Fame class of 2018

Goldberg has been confirmed as the first wrestler this year to enter the prestigious WWE Hall of Fame.

The former WWE Universal champion has been named as the first inductee in the class of 2018, the ceremony for which will take place ahead of WrestleMania in New Orleans.

"Goldberg's unique athleticism, persona and intensity captured the imagination of sports entertainment fans around the world throughout his illustrious career," said Triple H, WWE executive vice-president, talent, live events and creative.

Since his debut in 1997, Goldberg proved time and time again that he is one of the most powerful forces in sports-entertainment

"We are honoured to have Goldberg take his rightful place in the WWE Hall of Fame."

Goldberg retired from active competition after losing the Universal title to Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 33 having won it two months earlier from Kevin Owens at BackLash.

Throughout his career, he was presented as an all-conquering monster who beat his opponents quickly and effectively using a predominantly power move-based game.

After playing football at the University of Georgia and the NFL's Los Angeles Rams and Atlanta Falcons, the former defensive tackle took his hard-hitting work ethic from the gridiron to the squared circle

He became known for a long undefeated streak in World Championship Wrestling which came to a controversial end when he was beaten by Kevin Nash after a cattle prod was used on him by Scott Hall at Starrcade 1998.
