Chelsea and Arsenal last met in a cup final back in 2007 and it was the Blues that cam out on top, lifting the Carling Cup after a 2-1 win at the Millennium Stadium.
In a memorable encounter, Theo Walcott scored his first Arsenal goal to give the Gunners and early lead after ghosting past Ricardo Carvalho.
But Chelsea quickly got back into the game and equalised when Didier Drogba latched onto a ball over the top from Michael Ballack and the Ivory Coast striker ran on to slide the ball under Manuel Almunia.
And Drogba, so often the scourge of Arsenal, grabbed an 84th-minute winner, heading Arjen Robben's cross past a stranded Almunia.
The drama was not over though as an ugly brawl erupted between the two sides that led to red cards for Jon Obi Mikel, Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor as well as yellows to Fabregas and Lampard.
Over 11 minutes of injury times was played, but Jose Mourinho's side held on to win the first major silverware of the season.
