Liverpool are expected to announce on Wednesday that they plan to leave their Melwood training ground.
The club are keen to redevelop the Kirkby academy site, ending their stay at Melwood which began in the 1950s.
Boss Jurgen Klopp revealed last summer that he hoped to bring the academy closer to the first team - Melwood and the Kirkby complex are five miles apart - and the consultation process for the proposed redevelopment has now begun.
The total cost of the project, which has been agreed with the local borough council, is an estimated £50m.
According to the Liverpool Echo, the club will expand the current site to around 60 acres by buying 14 acres of Simonswood playing fields.
The revamped complex will be designed by KSS, a London-based architects who worked on the Olympic Stadium, Twickenham, Chelsea's Stamford Bridge and Tottenham's new training complex.
