Bolton chairman Ken Anderson is close to finalising a deal to take sole control of the club, according to Sky sources.
Anderson stepped in to help Dean Holdsworth's Sports Shield consortium take control of the club from former owner Eddie Davies in March.
But Holdsworth, who played more than 150 games for the club between 1997-2003, then stepped down as director of football at the Macron after just a month in the role as relations between the pair soured.
Talks are ongoing for Anderson to buy Holdsworth's 40 per cent stake and end the former striker's financial involvement at his old club.
Anderson admitted on Monday he would be forced to consider administration if no deal could be struck with Holdsworth.
Bolton are currently second in League One, despite a transfer embargo, with 40 points from 20 games.
