Nigel Pearson has agreed a three-year deal and wants to take the Rams up

Nigel Pearson has agreed to become Derby County's new manager on a three-year deal, with former Rams player Chris Powell as his assistant.

The 52-year-old Pearson has spent a season out of the game having been sacked by Leicester last summer, despite keeping them in the Premier League at the end of the 2014-15 season.

Derby sacked Paul Clement in February, having only appointed him last summer, and gave former Rams player Darren Wassall the chance to step up from academy director to interim head coach.

But having finished fifth in the Championship, Wassall failed to take Derby past Hull City in the play-off semi-finals, losing to Steve Bruce's Tigers 3-2 on aggregate.

Wassall had been with the club as a coach for seven years and said in February that "every man and his dog" would want the Derby job full-time.

But Wassall will return to his previous role and that privilege will instead fall to Pearson, who said: "I am honoured to be named as the manager of one of the biggest clubs in the country; a club in excellent shape and one with strong ambitions.

"It is firmly focused on achieving Premier League football. I will give absolutely everything I have to this role and do all I can to bring exciting, entertaining and winning football which our supporters can be proud of."

Former Charlton boss Powell, who made over 100 appearances for Derby between 1996 and 1998, was sacked by Huddersfield last November.

Chairman Mel Morris said: "It is great to have Chris Powell back at the football club. Chris is a top quality coach and gave us excellent service as a player. He will join Kevin Phillips and Pascal Zuberbuhler in the first-team coaching set-up.

"And we are delighted to welcome Nigel to the club. He is a proven winner, a highly experienced manager, who has track record of success in the Championship, and has also coached successfully in the Premier League."
